The final round of the British Drift Championship headed to, believe it or not a sunny North Wales. Anglesey in fact.
Its not the first time these guys and girls have come here so the scenery is nothing new but this year is a year of reversal. Like Round 4 at Lydden Hill, they have repeated this backwards trend and set up the track to run the wrong way, and wow what a layout it is. 80mph, Smoke, Dirt and of course the good old Irish sea. It was set to be a killer event. A weekend of bad luck and a day of amazing memories. As I'm sure with many who read this, I love a bit of Motorsport, any type can keep me going on telly, in the paper or live. But the one that tops the chart, the dream, the bucket list viewing was always formula one. So this year when circumstances allowed I decided I was going to watch my first live race. As I have family in Belgium and after a visit last year I decided spa was going to be my f1 race of choice, and as a petrol head only driving there would cut it.
The plan was simple, I would go on the Thursday, stay with my family which was 40 minutes from the track, see everything over the weekend and maybe even visit the nurbergring. Well that was the plan and plans don't always go right. I hit the m4 at 4pm for what should have been a three hour drive to Dover. But due to the good old m25 this journey became four and half hours. That's not so bad as I had considered that the m25 would not have been great. However this is when the fun really began, pulling up to the check in booth I was told the next available ferry I could get on was four in the morning. This was not going to work, so instead booked on for 8am and went looking for a bed. Now the problem with bank holiday weekends, late at night is that the only rooms left when you just need to crash for 6 hours are expensive spa hotels. Some people like to collect stamps, where as some people like to stand on a bridge and wait years for a train to go by but some people like tinkering with retro cars..
Its the later of these people that have created this mass gathering where machines from the “retro” era come to be driven hard and polished even harder. It isn’t somewhere you will find DRL and adaptive suspension, nor is it a place for crank starts and exhausts the shape of letter box’s This is a gathering for real cars. Once held at Prescott Hill but now in its first year of moving to the oldest motorsport venue in the world Shesley Walsh located just left of Worcester and up a little bit. Holding its first run in 1905 and now totalling 1000 yards, climbing 328ft with a lap record of 22.58s it sure has seen its fair share of quick cars. Anyhow writing is just not as exciting as posting pictures so please scroll down and enjoy my little selection. Definitive Words and Pictures by Louis Ruff Carrying on our Team Falken UK coverage in the British Drift Championship,
here is our Round 2 video from Knockhill, Scotland. Enjoy. One of the shows of choice for me last year was apex festival at Lydden hill. I went up with a couple of friends with some track cars that had been invited to go into some demo sessions during the Sunday. This can be marked as the start of my track experiences, going out as passenger in an old track spec corolla, the bug was seeded.
As part of our coverage of Team Falken UK we are attending all the BDC rounds for them.
Here is our Round One video. Enjoy. Here at Definitive we always plan our time very carefully so that we can cover as many events and different types of motorsport as possible. However after a last minute invitation from Simon Deaton who was competing in both the Time Attack and BRSCC Arrowpak Saloon Championships in his Porsche 997 Cup car, it would have been rude not to tag along.
Following on from our coverage of Simon Deaton and his awesome 911 here is a little video we put together
of his day out at Silverstone, competing in Time Attack and Euro Saloons both on the same day. Commitment! Press play and enjoy. Don't forget to keep your eyes out for the write up dropping soon as well as a special mini video, putting you in the hot seat! Silverstone, the 5th of April, one gloomy Sunday and lots of fuel guzzling race cars. Does life get any better???
Some people will disagree at this point but for us at Definitive its like a dream come true. Well sort of... Maybe a spot of sun wouldn’t go a miss but this is England after all. |
